SBM Urban 2.0 (SBM-U 2.0)
Goal: To make all cities “Garbage Free”, ensure ODF+ status, and achieve effective wastewater management.
Focus Areas
- Solid Waste Management: Source segregation, door-to-door collection, scientific processing, and adoption of the 3R principles (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle).
- Liquid Waste Management: Safe containment, collection, treatment, and reuse of wastewater, especially in cities with a population below 1 lakh.
- Legacy Dumpsites: Scientific remediation of legacy dumpsites to reclaim land.
- Sanitation: Construction of additional toilets to meet the needs of growing urban populations.
Key Responsibilities at the ULB Level
- Information, Education & Communication (IEC): Dissemination of messages related to cleanliness, sanitation, and waste management.
- Promoting Source Segregation: Encouraging households and commercial establishments to segregate wet, dry, and hazardous waste at the source.
- Door-to-Door Outreach: Direct engagement with citizens to promote hygienic practices and ensure participation in municipal waste collection systems.
- Behavior Change Campaigns: Promoting and institutionalizing “Swachh” behavior through awareness campaigns and local initiatives.
- Local Monitoring & Reporting: Supporting ULBs in monitoring sanitation issues and community participation, and assisting in data submission on the Swachhatam Portal.
- Event Participation: Mobilizing communities for cleanliness drives and national events such as Swachh Survekshan.
